oxidation of alcohol ,Types of alcohol, strong oxidizing agentsweak oxidizing agents

Introduction

the functional group of alcohol is -OH.
the first member of alcohol family is methanol. alcohols are polar in nature they are they are generally in liquid form due to strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Types of alcohol

alcohols are divided into 3 categories
a)1 degree alcohol or primary alcohol
b)2 degree alcohol or secondary alcohol c)3 degree alcohol or tertiary alcohol.

primary alcohols are -ch2oh
 secondary alcohols are -choh
tertiary alcohols are -coh

depending upon the oxidizing agents different alcohols are oxidised to different compound

strong oxidizing agents are KMnO4 ,K2 cr2o7/ concentrated H2SO4 ,

na2cr2o7/ concentrated H2SO4.

when primary alcohols are oxidized by strong oxidizing agents than acid formed
for example methanols become methanoic acid or formic acid

ethanol oxidized to ethanoic acid or acetic acid

propanol oxidised to  propanoic acid

 butanol oxidized to butanoic acid

 pentanol oxidised to pentanoic acid

when two degree alcohols are oxidized by strong oxidizing agents they form keto compound
for example propan-2-ol oxidized to propan 2 one

 but-2-ol goes to but-2-one

pent 2-ol goes to pent - 2 one

tertiary alcohol are are not oxidized by strong oxidizing agent

weak oxidizing agents are PCC or piditonium chlorochromate,

PDC , swern  oxidation, dmp etc.

when primary alcohol are oxidized by week oxidizing agents they becomes aldehyde
for example methanol becomes methanal or formaldehyde
ethanol becomes ethanal or acetal dehyde
 propanol becomes  propanal
butanol becomes butanal
pentanal becomes pentanal.

when secondary alcohols are oxidised by week oxidizing agents they formed keto compounds

for example
propan-2-ol oxidized to propan 2 one
 but-2-ol goes to but-2-one
pent 2-ol goes to pent - 2 one
